Working with the cats has taught me a lot about human-to-human interactions. Patience, persistence, and a gentle spirit go a long way in earning trust from a person (or a cat) who has been through trauma that has led to fear, anger, self-protection, or depression.
One recently awarded LIFT grant was requested by Janet Mills for Lebanon County Christian Ministries, where Janet has been volunteering for about 20 years. LCCM is planning to use the grant to help with their new homeless shelter.
Our partnership with Downey is one that started with a project during last year's Church: Beyond the Walls, and we have continued interacting with the staff and students over the past year. As we are seeking to be involved regionally as a church, Harrisburg is one place we can make a difference.
People were told and shown that they matter. They matter to God, and they matter to us. As one participant pointed out, "This is church. This is the gospel."
Yes, it’s a stretch of faith and personal comfort each time. But through my Nepali neighbors, I have realized that taking Church beyond the walls, when we all come together and do good deeds and share the love and message of God, is ALL day, EVERY day of the year.
